Company helps proud parents brag on their children
Christina G. Russell may have tapped an insatiable customer base for Madison: proud parents who want to promote their children's successes. She is founder of FAN-Tastic Decals.
A proud parent herself, Russell said her children excel academically and athletically. "I like to brag about my children's accomplishments." While living the past three years near Memphis, she observed many gimmicks on family vehicles promoting schools and sports.
"It seemed like everyone had a decal displayed on their auto," Russell said. She realizes "a need here" and had the "desire to start this business." Her husband, coined the name, FAN-Tastic Decals.
For her target audience, Russell is connecting with elementary and high school students, parents and grandparents. Selling decals would serve as an excellent fundraiser for school clubs and organizations, she said. She believes word-of-mouth endorsements and repeat business will lead to a successful venture. For sports, decals have an image of the ball in play, while cross-country running has more symbolic artwork. Cheer squads have representative icons, and band members could display decals with a musical instrument or notes. Mascots from all Madison public and private schools are sold.
An out-of-state sign company manufactures Russell's merchandise. "My prices are passed down at a wholesale cost with shipping and taxes separate," she said. A decal costs $12.
While commonly seen on vehicles, decals can be placed practically on any surface. "They're easily removed with some (spray cleaner) and a putty knife," Russell said.
Russell's background as an accountant has prepared her for entrepreneurship by working more than 14 years for multinational, Fortune 300 and 500 companies. She earned bachelor's degrees in accounting at Athens State University and in marketing and business administration at the University of North Alabama.
Her husband is a North Alabama private banking executive. Their children - daughter 9, and son 7, are Madison Academy students.
